I can't compare the two, really, because I've only seen Kick Ass. I enjoyed it. I agree with you, thought, that the latter owes the success it had to the Awesome Factor (e.g., the clip of Nic Cage shooting a little girl, which was what convinced me I needed to see the movie early on) and the strengths, toward which I am wary of applying so much credit, of both laughs and character development. It was the Awesome Factor that drew people in. What I mean to say is that people seem to be expecting the Geek Factor for Scott Pilgrim to perform the same duty, and it can't.
I'm still gonna see it this week. Whatever its failings, real or imagined, it's got to be better than Silver Surfer. I'm still waiting to get those hours of my life back.
