I have been looking at apartments and it seems that studio apartments have greatly gone up in cost since I last had an apartment. For the last couple of years I have cbeap rent and not paying extra for bills. There is a Knight's Inn near the place where I recently interviewed for $599 a month. Advantage is no deposit, no lease, king bed with all bills paid. Cable TV and free Internet and I would be 6 minutes from work.

It just seems like a good deal for an un-married guy. An apartment would be about the same cost with bills and that is before internet. People talk about theft at the hotels but surely that is just as possible at the cheap apartments.

What is the longest you have stayed in a hotel and what did you think?

Great article written by a fellow American expat living in Britain. I very much agree with what he's written on the topic. Some of the comments are worthwhile too.

The working environment in the US is one of the biggest reasons why e is apprehensive about moving to there and I completely understand. There are pros and cons to every place but the typical working life in the US is a pretty big con for someone who originates in the UK. I didn't think much of it while I lived in teh Americashire but once I stepped out and realized how others have it I felt/feel a little outraged. The US has an employer-employee relationship and boundaries that I can't quite wrap my head around. The miserly time off, the employment laws which greatly favour the employer, the fact that your boss can at any moment request your bodily fluids to test for substances that you may partake in on your *gasp* own time, etc, etc. There's a certain feeling of being "owned" (not in the internet pwned sense either) by your employer that rubs me the wrong way. It demonstrates a sort of shortsightedness and control freakery that seems very misguided to me.

I think the holiday time ties into that. I wish some of these standards could be loosened up in the US. Being overworked doesn't improve productivity.

Now, if you will allow me to put my heating on in this tiny overpriced and heavily taxed flat. :chuckle:

This is from the NASA image of the day a few days ago. It's the Spiral galaxy NGC 4921 as taken by the Hubble with other galaxies all around it (which always take my breath away). So let's share some of our work, doesn't matter if it's a quick sketch, a random doodle, or a painting that took you years to finish. We'd love to see it here!

Bad habits? Mine isn't necessarily biting, but I subconsciously pick at my nails/cuticles constantly throughout the day. It's something that I've done as long as I've remembered, and I started researching it on the internet in an attempt to learn ways to quit it. I guess it's a need for a feeling of perfectionism, picking at any little thing that doesn't feel "right", only to make things worse in the end.

A possible answer to my problem and I'm sure a lot of other people's is Lotion. :naughty:

Anyone have any bad habits they'd like to share, or how they conquered them?

When I was in junior high I got into a very bad habit of slouching, and I am tall, 6 foot 3 when I stand up straight but over the years I have gotten to the point where I slouch a lot and I am trying to get out of it. Mostly because I want to avoid serious back damage, if it hasn't already occurred and also because it makes me taller and after I lose the weight I want if I start standing up straight I should look much better. So starting this afternoon I have been forcing myself to sit up and stand up straight. I have adjusted my monitor and chair so that I am forced to sit up straight when I am at my desk. I am considering the use of a back brace to sleep so that in the night my back is straight.

Today I have been experiencing some minor back pains because my back isn't used to it and I fear some unrepairable damage may have occurred over the years. I am really hoping that I don't end up having to have back surgery to correct the issues, but I will just take NSAIDs for the pain and hope that over time it will be better.

Do you slouch? Have you ever slouched? What have you done to fix your slouching? I really don't want to be the hunchback of Texas anymore so I am going to work on fixing my posture.

The people need to be made aware of a threat that could be, quite suddenly, moaning and scratching at their doorways. I’m talking, of course, about Zombies. For too long the government has tried unsuccessfully to keep their existence a secret. Well, no longer, GirlyNerds! The walking dead are a real menace, and a probable hazard to your well-being. I am going to give you the basics here to ensure that you protect your most prized possession: your brain!

This post will teach you the basics:

How to Identify a Zombie

How to kill a Zombie

Household Weapons of Mass Destruction

How to Zombie-proof Your Home

Be sure to read closely as you may have already witnessed encounters without even knowing it.

Is it grey, smelly, and munching on your next door neighbor’s femur? Then, my friend, you have a Zombie on your hands!

Zombies come in a variety of shapes and types, and it is important to be able to identify each kind.

Undead Zombie

Attachment 2341
photo credit: a modified nytimes.com image. (THIS IS TEHPRIVATES.COM VERSION, NOT THE ORIGINAL IMAGE!)

Undead zombies are, quite literally, the walking dead. They are reanimated corpses that crave human flesh. Undead zombies are easy to spot because of their slow movements and their continuing decomposition. Undead zombies do not feel pain. Their bodies can be maimed, they can lose limbs, but they will still drag themselves toward the nearest living human. Undead zombies are easy to kill on their own, but extremely lethal in large groups.

Fast Zombie

Fast Zombies are very similar to traditional, undead Zombies. Except for the fact that they are freaking fast! Like, “the last man on earth just spritzed his abs with Axe cologne” kinda fast. Fast Zombies often tackle and then devour their prey. They are much harder to escape. Fast Zombies are often very sneaky. If they do not sense prey, they may move sluggishly. However, once a human is in range, they can sprint after them with incredible speed.

Infected (or Diseased) Zombie

Although this imposter may look like a Zombie–it may even eat brains like a Zombie–it is not necessarily a true Zombie. Infected Zombies are not the living dead. They are regular people suffering from some sort of strange virus or disease. Thusly, Infected Zombies will look different than regular Zombies: they may be feverish or flushed; they may vomit infected blood on victims; and they will not decompose over time.

If any of these describe your ex, yes, totally: it is HIS loss!

How to Kill a Zombie

warning: please make sure it is a Zombie FIRST!

There are two ways to kill a Zombie. You must either A) destroy the head or B) destroy the brain. A direct head shot will almost always kill a Zombie. Other good methods are decapitation, squeezing the head in a vice, or bludgeoning the head in with a blunt object.

A Few Household Weapons

You may not believe it, but the average American household contains several objects that make excellent Zombie-killing weapons.

Hammer: A hammer makes an excellent Zombie-killing tool. The flat end can be used for blunt force trauma. The sharp end is perfect for gouging eye balls. Also, the hammer is a useful tool in any carpentry situation.

Crow Bar: Crow Bars are also great weapons! Longer crowbars allow you to keep your precious, mortal body further from the Zombie while still bashing its brains in. Crow Bars are also helpful in opening jammed doors and whacking annoying comrades on the head.

Flammables: This is truly a last resort. If you must vacate your safe hold, setting anything on fire or making Molotov Cocktails is a great tactic.

How to Zombie Proof Your Home

If there’s one thing Zombies can’t stand, it’s heights (and taxes… but not in that exact order)! Zombies do not climb well. So wherever you are, your best bet is to go UP! Go to the roof, attic, or second floor (or third floor, Richie Rich) of your home.
Stockpile as much non-perishable food as possible! If you live in a two story house or an apartment building, DESTROY THE STAIRS. According to Zombie Scholar Max Brooks, “Get up the staircase, then destroy it” is one of the top 10 Zombie Survival tips! Remember, you will need a source of water! The average person can survive almost 2 weeks without food, but only mere days without water. You will also want weapons and supplies handy, if you must abandon your home.

Another important aspect of Zombie-proofing your home is to weed out the infected. Was anyone bitten? Did anyone ingest any Zombie bodily fluids? Did any weirdos succumb to Necrophilia? If so, KICK THEM OUT! He may be your brother now, but when he is slurping your mom’s intestines like spaghetti, you may want to deny the family resemblance anyway. This is often the hardest lesson would-be survivors must learn. Even harder to learn… without your brain.

Favorite Childhood Books

What books or stories were your favorite growing up? I'm not talking about things that were read to you, but what you enjoyed reading after you learned how to read. What about the story drew you in and what made it a favorite?

In grade school I really enjoyed two specific series of books. iJH will be happy to know that they both involve mice.

The first was by Beverly Cleary and it was entitled, "The Mouse and the Motorcycle."

There were two follow up books to this first one that continue to follow the story of Ralph the mouse, but by far this first book is the best. I don't remember exactly what grade it was that I read this, but I just thought it was such a neat story about frienship.

The second series is probably more well known. Robert C O'Brien wrote a book called "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" which gained popularity based on the MGM animated movie adaptation "The Secret of NIMH" which was released in 1982.

This story had everything including lovable characters, adventure, danger, and heroism. I also enjoyed the subsequent books to follow that were written by the original authors daughter.

In Junior High and High School I was turned onto a fantasy adventure series called Dragonlance that was started by a trilogy (later expanded to a quadrilogy) of books written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

If you enjoy fantasy at all then this is a must read. The storytelling and character development is excellent. It's an ensemble cast of protagnist that draw you in and take you on a great adventure.

So, how about you? What are your favorite books/stories from your growing up years?
