$49.99 including Toast 10, Espionage, Concentrate, ShareTool, Cashculator and MindNode Pro - and a few others that look like they might be at least a bit useful.

I boughted it - at least nine out of the (currently) 12 apps seem like they'll be decent to have.

AND ZOMFG INNOVATION! Almost everything (Toast left separate because it's >400mb) is included in one DMG. Progress.

Anyone else planning on, or made a purchase?

TehPrivates GenCon coverage was amazing and you should start seeing some new articles and video posted within the next month. The DVD will also be released in about two months. The DVD will be a three to four hour feature film along with five to ten hours of bonus footage!

DragonCon was mentioned as being covered, but we have determined that it's not needed. For the nerds and geeks, we have San Deigo Comic Con, New York Comic Con and GenCon coming within the next 12 months. We will decide mid next year if DragonCon is worth the time and money to cover.

For the other non-nerds, we will be covering many events including WWDC, possibly CES and MacWorld. Please use the contact form to suggest any other events that you would like covered.

The last bit of news here...new front page in two weeks! I have been working on a new layout to allow a better flow of content. I'll be posting a preview of it next week as well as allowing certain users access to it. Also, keep your eyes out for the new TehPrivates iPhone app to be released once Apple approves!

      That's about it for updates!

It looks like police in Zurich are subscribing to the "if you can't beat them, build them little huts to do the nasty in" theory of prostitution control. Only in Europe.

Prostitution has become such a problem in Switzerland that Zurich officials have made proposals to add "sex boxes" to the city. The idea itself is adopted from German cities like Essen and Cologne, and will be a way for prostitution to continue on behind closed, uh, doors.

The boxes will serve as quickie drive-throughs, so-to-speak, and will free up city streets from unsightly acts that haunt Zurich residents whose homes overlook the city's red light district. "They get up to all sorts in broad daylight - and we're sick to death of looking at it," one resident told the U.K.'s Metro. (Silvio Berlusconi and the Politics of Sex)

From the looks of things, the boxes are big enough to conceal vehicles while prostitutes and clients handle business, away from the public eye.

This somewhat laissez faire approach to Swiss sex industry control even comes an official police endorsement: "We can't get rid of prostitution, so have to learn how to control it," Police spokesman Reto Casanova said.

First Facebook didn't want anyone else to have the word "book" in the name of his or her online community and now it doesn't want anyone to have the word "face" either.

Facebook has apparently taken over the trademark application for "Face" from a company who operated a site called Faceparty.com and is trying to pursue the trademark. It won't be an easy task though, because Aaron Greenspan—the fellow who took Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to court over the creation of Facebook—is opposing the application according to TechCrunch:

Greenspan now has his own company, Think Computer, which is behind the mobile payments app called FaceCash (watch the TCTV interview with him).

If Facebook gets the trademark for the word "Face," that could spell trouble for FaceCash. "The possible registration has implications for my company (not to mention hundreds of others, including Apple, Inc.), so I've decided to ask the USPTO for an extension of time to oppose it," he explains in an email. Apple, of course, owns the trademark to "Facetime," the video calling feature on the latest iPhones.

Although Greenspan owns the trademark to "FaceCash", he wants to protect his ability to use the word "face" in future products. He also wants to make sure Facebook won't go after him. Given it's track record of vigorously defending its trademarks (which it is encouraged to do by the law or else risk losing them), that could become a very real possibility.

C'mon, you saw this one coming, right? Just like they always do come fall time, Apple will be holding a "special event" on September 1st out in San Francisco, and we'll be on the ground reporting live. Think we'll see that new Apple TV we've been hearing about? Some iPods? A 'one more thing'? Yes, probably. Tune in here at 10AM PT / 1PM ET on the 1st to catch the best liveblog in the business!

So, let the rumors fly! What do you think will happen?

I think we're all pretty certain, since the even is music related and the free iPod offer ends the 7th, that Apple will introduce or announce some new iPod models. A safe bet is probably an iPod Touch with a FaceTime-capable camera. I'm hoping for a cheap new iTV or whatever they end up calling it. Whatever happens I'm sure there will be some new gadgets for us to look at.

Looking back, in my geeky opinion, LaserDiscs are kind of the Blu-Ray of the VHS era. VHS video tapes were one of the first mainstream consumer video recordings. Sure before these there were old Super 8mm films and even BetaMax, but VHS was the most common and after winning the format war it would go onto dominate the market for years until finally being defeated by the digital DVD.

But before DVDs came along there was an analog video format, with an analog or digital audio track called Laserdisc. A Laserdisc is about the size of a vinyl record, with a cover just as big. Allowing for a great piece of cover art, and a book-like jacket with notes, descriptions, stories, and photos from the film. Laserdisc players and movies were expensive, and they were very slowly being adopted. Most users didn’t know the difference of the media and decided not to bother with it. LaserDiscs also couldn’t store the entire movie on one disc, even though each one was double-sided. Many movies over an hour were split across multiple discs. For Example the 1993 LaserDisc release of Star Wars has 5-sides just for the movie, that’s 3 discs with 2 sides per disc, with the 6th side remaining for supplemental features such as trailers and interviews. Early players could only play one side of the disc at a time, requiring the viewer to get up and flip over the disc manually. It wasn’t until later on where more advanced players could read the other side of the disc on their own. So if you wanted to watch “The Empire Strikes Back” from start to finish you would need to get up from your cozy sofa at least 5 times to switch discs and sides. 6 times if you wanted some bonus material.

      More awesomeness after the break!

This is less boring than crunches, and therefore better. It's even better to draw an explanation for an exercise in response to a request than it is to do that exercise.

If you had to choose between Facebook and Google who would you choose? Both have enormious amounts of our personal data, and they are both necessary evils of the Internet today. If you communicate with anyone there is a good chance that data goes through either or both of these companies. So if your life depended on it what one would you trust more?

Having analytics on everyone, Google remains king of the search engine. Plus Gmail is their highly successful e-mail client. Nobody thinks twice about the way they use it. While Google doesn’t publish its users data out in public, they still use it to tailor ads and who knows who has access to it.

By default, Facebook is a public site. Personal data is right out in the open. You have the ability to adjust the privacy settings but many don’t and willing or unknowingly publish their personal lives for the world to see. Their business model is to connect as many people as possible to reach a broader audience. In Facebook's eyes the more open the better. More people equals more ads which generates more money in their pockets so your privacy is not of their highest concern.

Both companies’ main objectives are to make the most amount of money possible and they are both competing against each other to be the dominant force of the social network. Google’s failed attempt at Buzz was their way to try to take momentum away from Facebook’s 500 million users. They now have a new strategy to compete and that is to buy existing companies and piece meal a Facebook clone to over take the giant. Facebook however is not budging and has once again proven that they are not going to back down as they recently announced Places. A new take on the popular FourSquare check in service.

Facebook and Google are playing an interesting game with one another now in that they both want to be king of social networks. Facebook is taking a page out of the Google playbook and wants a closed network where all data runs through it. Their goal is to have social media rule the world and right now they are succeeding. More and more websites have like buttons that link right back to Facebook were other users can see your interests. It makes money for both Facebook and outside companies while keeping Google out in the cold. Google knows this and is trying hard to break into the social media pie, but they might be to little to late as Facebook's dominance continues to grow.

I recently came up with an idea. To create a video experiment of using a 10 year old computer for modern tasks. I will probably use an iMac G3 desktop compared to a 1999-era Windows laptop. I'll try browsing around the web visiting sites like Engadget, Twitter, TehPrivates.com, etc and see how they hold up today. I'll see how well heavy-CSS sites work (like MobileMe or Engadget) and see if sites like YouTube function at all. A lot of today's websites use modern languages and coding, older machines don't take to this too easily. I'll see how easy it is to download a photo from a digital camera to the computer and upload it someplace like Flickr or Facebook. I'll try to copy a file to a USB flash drive. I'll perform a lot of basic tasks in addition to web browsing to see how things work. So I think this will be fun to see what works and what doesn't, it'll probably also be frustrating.

I'll try my best to stick with software that was used in that era - if possible I'll download a new browser to aid it's efforts in an additional test... currently debating if I should torture myself with Mac OS 9 - although Max OS X 10.1 would be just as bad. Windows may have the advantage in the web browser space with more updated browsers such as FireFox that are supported as far back as Windows 98.

Some of the machines I have available to me are the following:

Various G3 iMacs, up to 333MHz, OS 9 or OS X
      PowerBook G3 500MHz OS 9 or OS X
Dell Pentium II Laptop Windows 98 (gasp!)
Compaq AMD Laptop (2000) Windows XP

When I get some free time I'll start off this project properly and post a video updated.
